The temporal lobe sits lateral and inferior, near the temples. Think “tempo” — it’s the primary auditory processing region. But it does far more: the medial temporal lobe houses the Hippocampus and Entorhinal Cortex, making it the memory hub; the inferior temporal cortex is the endpoint of the Ventral Pathway for object and face recognition.

Structure and Function
Limbic System
The medial temporal lobe is core limbic territory. Deep connections with Hippocampus and Amygdala link perceptual processing to memory and emotion.
Wernicke’s Area
Located in the posterior STG (left hemisphere). Damage causes fluent but semantically incoherent speech (Wernicke’s aphasia).
Temporal Gyrus
Connections to Hippocampus and Amygdala
The Hippocampus (via entorhinal cortex) and Amygdala are anatomically embedded in the medial temporal lobe. Their proximity to temporal cortex enables tight coupling between perception, memory consolidation, and emotional tagging.
