- fires when navigating to specific locations,
- works with Grid Cells in the Entorhinal Cortex for tracking Spacial Navigation/distance/direction
- place field: each place cell assigned a specific preffered location know as this. entering the area means the corresponding place neurons fires
- mental maps: while you are moving ( see Theta Rhythm ), you see a unique changing combination of place cells that become active.
- entering a new environemtn will lead to the brain completely reorganizing its active cell patterns, this process is called remapping
- beyond their navigation use cases, they are also implicated in evaluating future possibilities and for Sequence Learning/sequential organization so that memories dont overwrite one another.
