Djinn are unique to Islam. It is not in the word “folk lore”, and is also responsible for the idea of the “genie” in modern culture.
They are considered a class of spirits that inhabit a hidden world known as al ghayb. They populate the world as both beneficent and malicious spirits.
They are made from “smokeless fire” (Quran 55:15) and possess free will, allowing them to choose between good and evil, similar to humans.
Some Types of Djinn
Ifrit - a powerful and malevolent type of djinn, often associated with fire and known for their strength and cunning.
Ghul - where the term “ghoul” comes from, these djinn hang around graveyards and consume human flesh.
Marid - the most powerful type of djinn, often depicted as large and imposing beings associated with water.
Si’lat - a sort of “succubus/incubus” type of djinn, known for their shape-shifting abilities and seductive nature.
